Ways to Get Rid of Old Appliances

You've reached the point where you're just tired of looking and using your old appliances. What's more, you're ready to take advantage of the rebates and energy efficiency that new appliances will provide. In addition to all of this, you've found a really good package deal and that significantly lowers the purchase price, which makes it an unbelievably good buy.

The other perk is that when you do upgrade your household appliances, you necessarily increase the value of your home and make life a bit easier. What you might not know, or, think about in advance, is what to do with your old appliances.

Ways to Get Rid of Old Appliances

As the nearby quote from the United States Environmental Protection Agency states, you will probably have a few options for riding yourself of your old appliances, however, in most instances, it won't come with a cost to you. Making matters even worse is just how you'll get those old appliances from your property to their destination.

The cost of appliance pick-up and/or disposal varies. For example, your municipal public works department may [or may not] provide free collection of refrigerant-containing appliances or there may be a fee for this service, which may vary by appliance type. Some retailers offer appliance pick-up and disposal services with the purchase and delivery of a new model. Depending on the retailer, a fee of $10 to $50 may be charged for this service. --U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

The good news is that there are ways to get rid of old appliances, and, possibly even make a bit of money. That would help to offset the cost of the purchase of new appliances, or, at least relieve you of the burden of having to load and unload them. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Try to sell your old appliances online locally. You can opt to put your old appliances up for sale locally on the internet. Do a bit of research to see what they are worth and then price them lower to get them to sell quickly. In the listing description, include that the buyer is responsible for transporting the appliances.
  • Give your old appliances to a local charity. This is a way to make a little bit of money indirectly. You still need to find their individual values, and, then phone a charity to pick them up and give you an itemized receipt. It can be a church, a non-profit, or an animal shelter, so, you'll have plenty of options.
  • Consign or sell your old appliances to a second-hand retailer. Another way to sell your appliances but not have to deal with the actual negotiation, you can simply consign your old appliances. While you'll have to share the proceeds, you're likely to sell it for more than privately.
  • Recycle your old appliances. One more option is to recycle your old appliances, particularly if they are in poor condition or not working at all. However, understand that you'll likely have to pay a fee for each appliance and will probably be responsible for transporting them to a drop off location.

If none of these are an option and/or come with a cost you to for disposal, just call a junk hauling and removal service to come right into your home, pickup the appliances, and haul them away.
